They are completely safe, barring a massive disaster. Triple redundant falling safety's now. If you service elevators you pay one of the highest liability insurances in the country. Only one I know pays more is an underwater welding company.

Yes if they are certified, inspected and properly maintained. Newer elevators are safer than older ones because they have more safety features built in. Elevator accidents are rare, but when they occur, they tend to be pretty gruesome and get a lot of press.
