Fixing the transmission would cost more than what it's worth. How can I possibly get the most value out of selling it? Are there places that would buy my car for the parts?

You can advertise it in the paper also - some people will buy cars outright for parts - make sure to be honest about the transmission. Or take it to a salvage yard - but they aren't likely to give you as much money as you can get for selling it yourself.
If the body is in good shape - the interior is good and most other parts work - you should get atleast $800 for it.

worst case, take it to the worst part of town and leave it unlocked with the key in it.

Junk yard, they may not give you a lot, depending on the type but they'll probably rebuild it, or if you need a new one they mmay take some off the price for a trade in.
