Well my boyfriend isn't much taller than i am. Maybe 2 inches. But it doesn't bother me one bit.
I think it all depends on how you feel about the person. Height should't make the difference if you like the person or not.

If the two of you really like one another it shouldnt matter. If the female is the taller of the two she can always wear flat heal shoes if she is that uncomfortable.

I guess that's the norm? That's what most people prefer & perceive it to be that way..
But I personally think it doesnt matter at all so long he's a great guy! It's a lot more than just the height!
