I prefer white onions in a mac salad. The green onions wouldn't look right. Now I love green onions, but I like the white onions and also their more bitey flavor in this dish.

I generally use diced vidalia onions or red onions in the salad, then garnish the top with finely chopped green onion for colour. I've also used caramalized onion which gives an entirely different, but amazing, flavour!

I personally like green onions... some people like only the green part, others like the bulb. Toss in a little of each.

Red onions may not be a bad choice either.

I like green onion in salad thinks...their milder and add color and freshness. White onion can be too strong.

Green for the color! Personally, I am not one for raw onions and green onions are smoother and easier to identify.

green onions, not as strong tasting as the white and they are more colourful in the salad
