It depends on the woman. Anything that shows you really know her, or that you pay attention.
for example- i am an animal freak, I particularly love dogs.
My husband was looking at a magazine at work and ran across a cute picture of a dog. He knew how much I'd like it and he cut the picture out for me and brought it home to me. Just a scrap of paper, but it told me he was thinking of me when I wasn't even there. Still have that damn pic in my wallet and every time I look at it, I think of him.

Making things is a great cheap and personal gift to give someone. Like baking your girl's favorite cookie is a great way to make her happy.

Something that says you have been listening to me (ie, you know my likes and dislikes). Something that says "I'm thinking about you." It can be a favorite candy bar or even a picked wildflower. If you want something they will keep indefinitely, something cuddly may work.
I had a friend who once gave me access to his movie library. It cost him nothing to let me borrow a few titles, but meant the world to me (as I'm a movie junkie) and I hadn't seen those movies.
