I friend of mine came on a visa-waiver program from Britain. He decided to stay to work and married and American girl for love. He thought he would be legal now, but his lawyer told him that's impossible, beacsue he came on a visa-waiver...
Seems like US laws are becoming more and more antiimmigrant. He likes it here and loves his wife. Should he leave or should he be executed as some of you dare to suggest?
Why can't people just live their and not worry about silly things like papers? Why can't we live in free world, uncomplicated by beaureaucracy?
He'll have to spend years in waiting and work crappy jobs.
Is that the American dream?

Walter, were you awake for the last 5 years? Mohammed Atta was the terrorist who came here LEGALLY and got his student visa renewed 6 months after he crushed a plane into the WTC and killed thousands of people. That's how INS works! Normal people who just want to work and illegal, while terrorists get a free pass!

Hi:
I am a US immigration lawyer, and I had had many clients in a very similar situation. ALL of them were able to adjust status to the status of a lawful permanent resident in the USA (and got their green cards).
Even though he came on a visa waiver from UK, if he kept a proof of his lawful admission to the US and can show that he did not have a preconceived intent to immigrate, and they are validly married -- she should be able to become a permanent resident.
P.S. He shall not depart the USA until he actually gets his green card.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions. You can email me if you wish at lubasmal at yahoo dot com

I'm pretty sure that machiko_146 is right. However, I'll still answer this sob story question with the information you are giving us. He should:
a. Go back to Britain.
b. Come back to the U.S.A. on a visa.
c. Apply for a green card.
-Also:
a. If they truly love each other, they will still love each other while they are apart and when he comes back to the states.
b. "He'll have to spend years in waiting and work crappy jobs. Is that the American dream?"
*Yes. Everything is enjoyed more when it's earned. (Which is why average people are often happier then wealthier ones when they get the things they want.) He'll gain work ethic from those jobs that he will have with him for the rest of his life. American history is full of people like this.
c. "Get a Green Card? Hehehe. It's 2006, noone is letting people be legal today. Maybe you got a free pass years ago when it was easy."
*Then explain to me how some of us (including myself) have friends that recently came here legally from other countries.....
P.S. I agree with Dar. Immigrants that BECOME American citizens are the ones that are truly entitled to a chance at the American dream.

Granted, I haven't been able to read each and every post, but I doubt that anyone has called for the execution of legal immigrants.
"Silly things like papers?" So, I guess any contract that you ever sign should not be upheld because it's just a silly little paper? How about if the bank comes and takes your house and car? The only thing that makes them yours is silly little papers. Do you file your tax return every year? Are you married? Did you get a license? Do you have a college degree? Those are just silly little pieces of paper that make a huge difference in your life.
In fact, why have laws at all? How about if everyone is just allowed to run free and do whatever they wish? Our laws are just words written on silly little papers.

Yes that is the American Dream. As a foreigner he should have check out the laws earlier. What makes him more special than anyone else in regards to starting at the bottom like every other real American citizen does and Immigrants have done for hundreds of years.

Buddy - most Americans work in "crappy jobs" He has to abide by the laws like the rest of us!
Why do you think that just because one may be an immigrant, that they have the right to come her illegally and sap out the resources meant for and paid by US Citizens and those here legally --schools and medical top the list of "freebies"
He needs to wait his turn, pay his dues, like the rest of us.
Americans don't have a problem with immigrants, as long as they are LEGAL!!!!!

Well, since his lawyer was full of crap and you can become a citizen even after a visa waiver, I would suggest getting a different lawyer. Failing that, I hear Britain is a charming place to raise a family.

the whole world can't fit into America, there are already 11 million illegals here are you trying to say that that is not a problem that needs attention. I think that they should all stay in their own countries and protest there and try and change their own countries instead of trying to change ours. It is ridiculous
