then won 4 more than lost
means 20-4 = 16 (which means won 8 + lost 8)
8+4=12

You have two different questions. In the first one (no tie) you won 12 but lost 8.
In the second one, you won 11, tied 2, and lost 7.

Substitute L + 4 for W and 2 for T.
L + 4 + L + 2 = 20
2L + 6 = 20
