Why so much animosity?

Also, from this question, how can you tell if I am an Atheist or an Agnostic or a Muslim or a Jew or a Christian?

Couldn't I just be a person asking a question? Or a Budhist? Or a Pagan?

I don't use the answers as an us versus them forum.
I find a wide variety in the questions from screes and rants that are barely questions and flirt with being reported to the more open questions and some very thought provoking ones.

I believe some people are more extreme here because they have the veil of anonymity... if they said the thing they say here to someone in a coffee shop and they offend the person there might be consequences but here on-line those who wish to can rant on and on venting about whatever they perceive as their enemy and
saying things they could never say in public where they would have to face the music... I skip the Q's that look like BS
to each his own.

actually I have noticed that most people are toning down the rants. probably because they get reported when they cross over into blatant insults.

I think perhaps to some it is, not all. I know it's not for me. I will say I try not to have animosity towards anyone here. You can't tell from the way a question is phrased what belief system a person comes from. I know this because most assume my beliefs when I ask questions and most assume wrong.

You're really obsessed with this "how do you know what i believe" thing, aren't you?
Yes, Yahoo! Answers is a game of us vs them, but it's also a way people can find information and discuss topics that interest them.
I'm not a huge fan of using the word attack to describe an argument. It suggests we shouldn't dispute each others' beliefs, which I believe is an important aspect of holding any belief. If I'm secure in my own beliefs I shouldn't mind other people questioning them, indeed I should question them myself.

Because usually the tone of the question sets the answers. Sure, you will always have some prostelizising for their beliefs, but usually honest, not judgemental questions get polite answers. If you're looking for a fight, you'll get it.

We can't tell. It just goes to show you ANYONE can be obscure and vague enough to be misunderstood and attacked no matter what the belief system is. And every side does it...not just THEM.

Because the bible says we must choose a side with our free will. You are either with Him or against Him. Jesus is the only way, and the bible says we must be against anyone who denies this. It is our duty to try to show them the way to Christ, but if they refuse, then they are damned to hell. We must defend the bible as God's true word. We will be persecuted for it, just as the bible prophecized.

Well, for one thing, the Jim Darwin name makes it fairly clear to any creationist. Speaking only for me, the animosity goes both ways.

You could be any of those. I think that the natural response when religion is discussed is to be defensive of one's own views.

No-one can tell what belief you follow unless you say so yourself. This is true, people should respect all belief systems.
