The only way you can be sure you have diabetes is by getting a test. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) now recommends that everyone over age 45 should have a fasting plasma glucose test. If test results are normal, the test should be repeated every three years. If you have risk factors for diabetes, you should be tested at a younger age and more often. The high risk factors include:

I had the same experience only 1X when I was a teen, and it haunted me for years. I chalked my episode up to a bad dream, but it was exactly how you described, except I was waking up, my body was not. All, I can tell you is the human body has many complexities. From what I understand about sleeping patterns are the following: do not go to sleep when you are over tired, get enough of it, and try to have routine sleep. This way your body will have the urge to sleep and wake up with out any "Twilight Zone" side affects. This may be a little vague, but it's the best I can offer. If you would like to go a step further, local hospitals and universities do sleep studies. I was going to be a guinea pig, but for now have my sleep under control. Good night!

The symptoms of diabetes may begin gradually and can be hard to identify at first. They may include fatigue, a sick feeling, frequent urination, especially at night, and excessive thirst. When there is extra glucose in blood, one way the body gets rid of it is through frequent urination. This loss of fluids causes extreme thirst. Other symptoms may include sudden weight loss, blurred vision, and slow healing of skin, gum and urinary tract infections.

The classic symptoms of diabetes are:
frequent urination, with large volumes of urine (polyuria),
excessive thirst (polydipsia),
hunger (polyphagia), and
weight loss.

Other symptoms might be:

fatigue,
blurry vision,
odd aches and pains,
dry mouth,
dry or itchy skin,
impotence (in a male),
vaginal yeast infections (in a female),
poor healing of cuts and scrapes, or
excessive or unusual infections

Not everybody will have every one of these symptoms. Indeed, some people may have no symptoms at all!!!!!

Hi, some of the symptoms of adult onset diabetes can include unquenchable thirst, weight gain or loss (sudden and severe/unusual), dizziness (especially if you have not eaten well or the right foods). Advanced symptoms can include disturbances of vision (blurring/unable to see well or focus) and excessive urination. PLEASE see your MD if you have ANY of these symptoms. Diabetes is a progressive disease if left untreated. It can cause blindness and permanent organ damage.
