Not always. They are configured as "Fail Safe" basically to reduce the number of complaints vendors and manufacturers have to face. But you can always modify these settings to get personalized performance.

Default settings are only suggestions. Depending on what you are using the software for will depend on which settings you change (if any). A general rule of thumb: if you don't know what the settings control or how to use them, Don't touch them.

Many times, no.

Defaults are set to maximize the exposure of the program.

For example, Quicktime always wants to set itself as the default for everything.

I prefer my own settings, you can change this easily and also go back to dafault, if you are not satisfied . you dont always need the default settings either
