Playing sports will help to a certain point but you still need a proper exercise program to help you:
1) lose fat
2) become more effective in the sport
3) build muscle
4) and avoid injury
30 minutes to 40 minutes of cardio for 4-5 days a week (sports can be included in this)
resistance program 3-4 days a week exercises for overall body development
abs: situps actually just develop the muscle and not lose fat especially around the stomach...but doing abs to strengthen your core muscles is excellent especially for sports, crunches, reverse crunch, planks, bicycles kicks, leg raises
3 sets of 15 is plenty at first.
and diet diet diet... excellent foods enriched with good nutrients is optimal for sports and to help you lose your fat around your stomach area

Of. course, it is cardio. My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.
On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.
The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.
Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

Diet and exercise is a tricky subject, just walking down the road burns calories, which burns fat. Regardless of what anybody says, you need calories to loose weight, if you exercise. Follow the 5 steps, 1. Stretch 2. warm up 3. exercise, 4. cool down, 5. Stretch again. Do aerobic exercise for weight loss and toning, do anaerobic exercise for muscle building. Eat right and keep a regular schedule.

Yes on both counts both are a form of exercise and build muscles while burning fat. But you must also eat right, if you are wanting to lose weight.

Sweating that way means that you are losing fat. Doing sit ups and all will also help getting rid of fat. But those "fat cells" are very sneaky and always remain in your body...waiting to be fed that extra sugar.. The trick is not to eat more (in terms of calories) than you lose as the result of your exercise.

sit ups strengthen abs but will not cause fat to be lost from the abdominal area.Drinking plenty of fresh water helps to speed up metabolic processes and hastens fat reduction after strenuous exercise

Everything you are doing will burn away the fat. Just lay off the soda and chips and you will see results.
