It seems to be. Like recreational drugs, it gives many of them a false sense of superiority.

Agree Agre Agree but not to you, I think for some people it can be all they have and then may act as a drug or escapism of reality.
However if i personally (not to bash peoples beliefs) were a christian, catholic, or muslim person in todays society i would choose a way better drug!!!
Bewilder the herd, make fear the most attainable reaction, make magick and love seem evil.......and there you go, we all go on preaching the bible which was written by a man sum thousands of years ago........
And in the end we all sound like dillusional pricks!

Nietzche once said "Religion is the opiate of the masses." Well, what's wrong with that?
Surely television, videogames, sports, hobbies, all of these are opiates too.
The truth is reality is ugly. Everyone has to find some way of coping with it, and I don't know why religion is any less valid for helping people deal with their lives than anything else. Sure it's to help people handle reality, but so are many other things that are even less worthy pursuits. Some people turn to drugs and alcohol to handle reality. At least spending time on a church pew won't give you aids or ruin your liver.
What, you want people to have nothing to enjoy?

Yep, most of my friends KNOW I'm psychotic and delusional lol If someone is truly a Christian and has a relationship with Jesus, reality is a reality! It's about facing life issues head on, and going right thru the center of things we're afraid of, not wanting to do, things we have issues with, it's about knowing that we aren't alone and don't have to be afraid. I don't know how many things Jesus has helped me with, I used to be a drug addict, a real mess, and now I know Him and have a relationship with Him. Religion? Not sure about this, relationship? Yeah. Reality is really hard to handle sometimes because of my background, after all I turned to drugs young because I had many problems, and it's nice now to face things head on and know I'm not alone to do it.

True religion is the means to seeing reality. Reality means seeing the world as God sees it, not through the clouded lenses of human "wisdom" and human greed.

Some think ignorance is BLISS! But ignorance breeds FEAR. And fear is the enemy. We have a spirit within that is just
as, or more powerful than the majority of spiritual entities
we might encounter. Only if we give into fear, can any
entity take advantage of us.

I agree they are functionally insane.
Maybe it's more like reality is the drug to cure their insanity, but they don't want to take their medicine.
