Well, the immigration issue is about the Whole Pot O Beans, not just a bowl-ful. What's wrong with this picture? For years and years and years, primarily liberals but also some conservative business backers have warmed to the idea of having a 'soft border' with Mexico, because it's lucrative and humanitarian and it'll promote whirled peas, etc etc etc. But, then again, maybe it's not.
Agriculture has a long history, in both the United States and Mexico. And, just because someone doesn't have any currency does not make them 'poor'. If you had a big farm with many horses, that too was a form of 'wealth', the more horses, the richer you were etc. Back before currency became the form of trade, people did barter back and forth, for gems, for precious metals, for cattle and horses, and for land. Now, it's all about money, and getting as much as you can, legally or otherwise.
The murky border has left a Big Black Hole as far as law enforcement is concerned, either that of Mexico, or of our country. And, you get what we see today. Nobody likes it,
except those profiting by it, and some of those people are crying 'foul' now that the law's being enforced.
I endorse the idea of having the border laws enforced. Ours is one of the few countries that's as lax as we are, and for generations, that concept has worked ok...but now, but now...
The world has changed dramatically. The 20th century saw 2 world wars, global population growth that's off the scale,
the introduction of the motor vehicle, the airplane, space exploration, and the Bomb. The 20th century saw the fall of communism, and the rise of widespread global poverty.
Rather than representing 1/5th of the global population, our country now represents about 1/20th of the global population.
Numbers numbers numbers, what do they all MEAN?
Basically, we had a little bit of luck, and some people with a little bit of brains, and now we've got a little bit of prosperity. But, not for long, at the rate we're going. The august bodies and powers-that-be have seen fit to put our country further in debt by 2 billion a day, and instead of having the world at our back, we've got the world at our gates, insistently demanding unfettered entry.
America's the Big Paycheck, the Ultimate Payday, and the
mantra of 'growth' has been heard, coast-to-coast. 'Grow, GROW!' is heard from the cheerleaders, the people that thrive off our economy by virtue of their stock holdings. But, this enthusiasm is expressed without consideration for the poor, the huddled masses, trying to make next month's rent, and stay free of the oppressive tyranny of Madison Avenue.
Maybe it's time for everyone to take a little 'time out' with the growth and immigration business...rather than having Golden Goose sandwiches, how about instead we look deeper at our economic model in general, and re-locate our ethics in all of this.
Mexico, AND some other countries, including ours, all need to step back and think about things like the people that get caught in the middle of all of this, as well as the environmental side of things, just kind of 'take 5' with the whole mess, and see if we really like where we're going...maybe there's other ways to get things done that don't involve Pickett's Charge against our borders, or the years of shady business that've taken place along our border.
Reform's not hard, but you do have to get started...6.6 billion people gotta eat, sleep, and **** somewhere, hey, I hear America's letting people move in all they want...
