How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another? When a house burns up, it burns down. You fill in a form by filling it out and an alarm clock goes off by going on. When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this answer, I end it? Now you see why it takes 3-7 times as long to learn English as it does to learn Spanish and why English sucks!!

I've always heard "slim chance" as opposed to "thin chance".

I think "slim chance" (or if there's a "thin chance" that I haven't heard of) it means something is unlikely, but the description of any "chances" is kind of on the accurate side (if chance could be described or measured in words rather than in numbers). This term can be used in a completely unsarcastic way.

"Fat chance" is the sarcastic way to make the point that there's really a "slim chance". "Fat chance" is a little edgier and a little meaner, but it is less "accurate" or objective than the calmer, "slim chance", is.

"Fat chance" is always said in a sarcastic way. If you say this, you actually think that there is very little chance that it will happen.

"Thin chance" is not a common idiom like "fat chance", but if I heard it, I would think it meant that there was very little chance that it would happen.
