It's always akward to accept a compliment, because you don't want to agree with it and sound like your bragging and you also don't want to sound really negitive and shoot down thier compliment. It's not as awkward if the task you did was with someone else, but if you were the only one that did the thing, how would you responed to someone complimenting you?

Modesty:
"Thank you but really, I could not have done it without the help/assistance of (person)."

"I'm pleased it meets your needs (or equivalent). I'm sure someone else could have been equally be up to the task."

"It was a small matter that I'm sure you could have equally managed. And thank you."

Be genuine with your feelings; mean what you say or it'll fall flat on your face. You'll yet learn to be a more gracious person over time. Smile and be happy that you did good.

Simply smile and say "thank you. How kind of you to say that." You have graciously accepted the compliment and given the complimenter a little boost as well.

Certainly receiving compliments are really embarrassing. I have faced when i won an award.
It really becomes difficult to say thanks with smile with lots of emotions inside..
But dear that's the way it is. Etiquette says so. As there is no perfect way to acknowledge, but it should certainly vary with the person you are dealing with. As receiving compliment from close like family is different.. but from some strange or unknown is different. i would like to close by saying it depends on the situation and the relation you share with the person who complimented you.

Well since it sounds like you DID something, maybe say, "Yeah it was a little hard, and I am so glad you took notice, that means so much to me". Now, you took the focus off yourself and compliment them inreturn, and both of you feel good, right? And, I am assuming it would be genuine and heartfelt, and therefore enforcing a strong bond of freindship. Wow, your lucky to have such a friend in your life.

Just smile and say thank you. That's the proper way to handle it. Nobody thinks you're bragging if you do that. But don't use the compliment as an excuse to go on and on talking about yourself. Just say thanks and move on.

Why not just say 'thank you so much' and smile nicely? that seems to be simple and honest.

If what you did really affected a person positively, you might also add "it is really nice to have someone NOTICE when you get it RIGHT" and smile.

Simply say, "Thank you," or, "That is kind of you to say," and move on. Avoid making excuses whether they are real or imaginary. Accept the compliment graciously; it will show your maturity and confidence.

Someone complimented me on my shoes the other day, and I said, thank you, they are sooo old. Why did I say that? I don't know, but don't say that.

This came as a surprise to me also, but savoir vivre says that you should just smile and say nothing. (so no thank you!)
