listen to me becaue I am a professional travel agent. depending on the airline most of them, like Continental Airlines, will accept your suitcase free of charge but keep in mind that the total combined weight must not exceed 30 pounds.

if you have a doubt, please contact the airline directly so that you can the information first hand and not to need to get a charter flight like the fist guy replied.

If your sax is in a hard carrying case I would check it and get them to label it fragile. Sometimes it also depends on the airline companies. Ask them at the counter first. But my suggestion is just so you can be considerate to the other passengers. I hate it when I travel and I have no room for my laptop bag. One other option you can do is, put the Sax in the compartment and put your backpack stowed below the seat in front of you if you do not care much for the leg room. I on the other hand need the leg room. But I would check it in fragile. Its not extra cost.

I don't think that the saxophone will make it, because carry-on luggage has to meet certain size requirements. I believe a saxophone in its case will just exceed those requirements. The FAA says this about max carry on: Maximum carry-on size = 45 Linear Inches. Or, Length (in inches) + Width (in inches) + Depth (in inches) = 45 Inches.

You may want to check with your airline, they may help you out somehow, perhaps let you check that third item free, perhaps not. Give them a call with your question, though, and they'll help you.

Also, if you're traveling with a companion, he or she may be able to carry on a bag and let you use his or her other checked luggage allowance for one of your items.

It depends on what airline and what location you are traveling. Normally, suspecting that the weights are under limits, yes.

Sounds like you need to charter a cargo flight.
