Because they're giving up worldly rewards on earth, whether material or in terms of power or others high regard, which was how Jesus claimed in the Bible that we have to live to get rewards in heaven.Think how he said it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man or similarly someone of high power or earthly regard to enter the kingdon of heaven,as they'd have already had their rewards. Being meek doesnt signify weakness, but quite the contrary. Its being strong enough to put others before you and make sacrifices, to make yourself humble to others for their good, so in other words to be completely unselfish. Not to the extent of degrading yourself or forgoing rights, more to the ends of avoiding arrogance, violence etc. So by being meek, you're putting everyone before you, living as Jesus did and as he wanted, and so you will get the reward of eternal life and the highest form of blessing to rule over earth from the Kingdom of heaven at God's side (so in effect inheriting the whole earth, its rewards and more). In addition Jesus promised a new heaven and earth for those that follow him, again alluding to the idea of the rebirth in death into a new life with God.There is also the hope and peace you will find in your life on earth living as Christ did. The meek deserve all this as they are living as commanded basically and its hard while they're doing so, so they deserve something for their effort!
Hmm, sounds quite like an RE lesson (not into religion particularly but did go to Catholic Schools, which although far from constantly going on about religion did however make RE lessons compulsory, during which we had time to ponder questions like you asked).

actually, the meek have been getting the shaft as of the past 5500 years or so. Since the so called "non-meek" seem to be handling the earth irresponsibly, the earth will take it course to maybe give the meek a chance someday.

The meek get everything??? Maybe you should look up the meaning of meek. The meek do not get everything and are at the mercy of tyrants and bullies often times and have been for millenia.

I suppose because unconditional love is the only thing that counts in the eyes of an all loving God, but for a lot of people actually loving their fellow human beings unconditionally is a terrifying thought, so the meek have a very long wait.

It makes perfect sense. The meek have always inherited all that is worthless. So why not the earth?

To take a line from Monty Python's Life of Brian, "What Jesus clearly fails to realize is that it's the meek who are the problem!"

It doesn't mean "meek' as in wimpy, wimpy, wimpy. It means "teachable" i.e. open to learning and knowledge. By that standard many of Jesus' followers will inherit the used burger wrappers from the Wendy's trash can.
