We don't worship idols. This question has been asked a lot already. The statues or pictures are just representations of God in all its forms. Think of it the same way Christians pray before a statue of the Virgin Mary or Jesus on the crucifix. It's just a point to focus attention and meditation.

Idol is a symbol of God as much as the photo of your beloved ones. In this to days scientific world if you can transmit your speech and your feelings and picture at any corner of the world thru some mediums why can't your spiritual feelings be transmitted across to the only one God, through the medium of idols?. What is more important is not an out worldly act but ones faith and belief. There are many Hindu seers and saints who have reached that state of spiritual level don't use idols or photos as they can experience God and understand Him in more better way than you and me! The mediums of worship are used only to concentrate ones mind and direct it towards the holy existence. The spiritual perfection can not be reached over night and spirituality can not be injected with brute force or bribing people. It is a matter of ones faith, belief and experience that brings in real spirituality. Hatredness, untouchability and all such differentiations are the result of politics of religion and not spiritual awareness. Knowing and believing God is more important than the excercise used in the process. It is not necessary that every hungry man should eat the same food what you like to have! It is left to every ones liking and taste. Perhaps Hinduism is the only religion which believes in the omnipotent presence of God that is why it is more lenient towards other religions. And you also must have seen Hindu people visiting Darga or Church which proves the greatness of Hindu phylosophy!

Hindus don't worship Idols, they conduct a Tantra around the idol called Pooja Tantra. It involves many steps, like relinquishing, placing, exploring and so and so forth which after the seventh step purifies you. In fact our inner soul which is troubled is handed over to the Interceder in the process and taken back and given back to the Liety.Only Tnatris can perform Pooja and those who do it at home are infact is either an exponent in Tantras or are just mimicing Tantris. To go further, Tantris through this 7 step process is able to connect to an Interceder who is given contorl over what is placed and then the purified spirit is given back which the Tantri places back on the Liety. There are thousands of Interceders which the Tantri only can identify who can solve the particular problem of thousands of Lieties visiting the Temple. The important thing is when the connecting and handing over part is made no request is made to the Interceders who are called Devis. Actually these are Interceders to God, so even for Hindus there is only one God and many Intereceders to God.

An precis and formless God is confusing to hold close, think of and visualise. purely as a Map facilitates you to visualize and understand the region and place of a undeniable usa & a city , in addition an idol makes it ordinary and straightforward to pay interest one's energies in prayer directed at God it incredibly is represented by making use of the Idol in front of you. in fact the Idol is a gadget for the worshipper to pay interest his energies and channelise the strategies in direction of spirituality , in direction of that one God, the writer whoever He/She is. Hindusim is a life-form, a faith, a branch of religion. The Dharma , the common philosophy as laid down interior the Vedas and Upanishads is extremely distinctive from the ritualistic Hinduism as praciticed in present day circumstances. So is the case with different faiths.

Do not be so proud that because your friend, parent, guru or scripture told you that God is unique, you immediately understand Him, realise Him and directly go to Him and worship Him.
For most who sincerely try to realise Him one lifetime is not sufficient.
To satisfy the inner urge to offer service to God might have created Idols.
Idol is not God but idol, being a part of the Total, also is GOD.

Munna Bhai : " Did you read the answer of Mr Ashish B ?"
Capn : " Yes it took me long time to finish it... But I could not relate his big answer to the question.. "
Munna Bhai :" But what is wrong with it .. I mean I do idol-worshipping every day."
Capn :" Nothing at all provided the holy scriptures like vedas had permitted it. Besides would you like to be called as the Hindu of inferior level as Mr John in his answer has mentioned. Mr B has also endorsed his view that in the initial stages of spritualism idol-worshipping is meant to help in meditation. But how come the Vedas didnt mention it?"
Munna Bhai :" Dont you worship the stone at Kaba .. dont you kiss it and dont you kneel before the picture of Kaba ?"
Capn :" No we dont... In fact no muslim will ever kneel before the picture of Kaba and just to avoid hotch-potch every muslim is required to perform namaz FACING THE KABA .
Moreover since Mecca and Madina are very sacred to the muslims, they not only kiss the stone at Kaba but each and every thing which comes on thier way to it. "
Munna Bhai :" Then how come idol-worshipping came into beeing ?"
Capn :" I reproduce one hymn of Rigveda which clearly indicates that even LINGPOOJA was not performed by the Aryans and it was the Dasyus/Asuras who used to do SHISHNAPOOJA.
NA YATAV INDRA JUJU JUVERNO NA VANDANA SHAVISHTHA VEDHYABHI
SA SHARDHDARYOVISHUNASYA JANTORMA shihnadeva APIGUTRANTA NA
In fact the Aryans adopted the rituals of the original residents i.e Dravidians during Harappa period. Since then Hindus have kept thier holy scriptures in dark and adopted the rituals which were prohibited....and do not follow the teachings of Vedas"
Munna Bhai :" What about the muslims ...? Do they follow the teachings of Quran ?"
Capn :"They dont... I agree with you....The muslims have also forbidden the spirit of Islam and they have started following thier ULEMAS and not the QURAN ..."
Munna Bhai;" Anyway ....Happy Ramzan to all my muslim brothers ...."
Capn:" And happy NAV_RATRI to all my Hindu brothers ...May God bless all of us ...and may God bring us more close ....for the prosparity of country...."

First of all Hiduism is not exactly a religion it's a way of life and cultural tradition of India. Hindus believe that each human being has a God in him thats why Hindu greetings is "NAMASTE" "I salute the God in you" So they have mulitiple Gods and Goddesses. God is not only a male it represents the female also. Equal rights you knw. Very matured and modern religion of this planet.

Idols are symbols and praying before it (not praying it) helps in concentration. In many cases idols are immersed after puja period(Ganesh Puja, Durga Puja,to cite for example) Good that you have taken care to read some texts but they are not sufficient to reach the conclusion of yours.Bhagbat Gita talks of demi-God not God.In Mahabharat of which Gita is a part there is mention of idol worship. So also in Ramayan where Lord Rama worshipped idol of Shiva before going to war.Rigved does not prohibit it,it says 'donot worship anybodybut Him) We worship our God who is one but with many manifestation, before idols so that we can identify ourselves with him

There are levels within Hinduism.
At the lowest level, people do worship statues (idols).
At higher levels of Hinduism, the statues are viewed as representative of God, rather than literally God.
At even higher levels of Hinduism, the entire universe is viewed as God (including the statues).
At even higher levels of Hinduism, everything is viewed as illusion, a dream, an ultimate irrationality.
Cordially,
John
P.S. I am a Christian.

Some religions do not wish to show picture of so called gods. Why are they jealous?Hindus make picture of God,as they see Him.Cr eater, preserver or destroyer. We do not mind people praying some other deities or mass angers,we know they meant to pray only one God.
