I am moving to Glasgow, but when visiting the US I'd like to be able to use the phone. Any advice on plans or phone models?

You need a Tri-band Phone to work in the U.S and Roaming facility enabled(By Your Service Provider).
T-Mobile Own the Planet of Communication around the World
(I have 2)
One for UK Use and One specifically for U.S.(This one has a P.T.T. facility-"Push To Talk")
So it works like a Walkie Talkie!

And when in the Middle of Nowhere (I use a Satellite Phone)Expensive but only to Buy and Use(But essential when you are in remote areas)

we use t-mobile. i'm not even sure what kind of phone we have (my husband has it with him so i can't look at it right now). there are places in the us that don't pick up a signal though so you have to be patient waiting until you get into an area where there is one. we can't use our mobile phone when we're in my hometown in america but have no problem once we're an hour away in any direction. be sure to have a phone card with you so you can use a different phone if you can't get a signal at your destination.

be sure you get a phone that says it can be used in the US because not all UK phones can be.
these ones can:

Siemens C72

Motorola C975

Motorola V220

Samsung C120

I have always found the people at Carphone Warehouse to be very helpful.
