conitnue to believe that Pascal's Wager is a valid argument for being and trying to convert others to christianity? Don't they realize it's one of the dumbest arguments ever?

Well, we are talking about christians, so I guess I should have pretty low expectations about comprehension and rational thinking.....

Toronto,

I am a Christian and I rarely hear any Christians use Pascal's Wager as an argument. In fact most of the ones I talk to have to be told what the wager is.

I first heard of it on a segment of Touched by an Angel.

It impressed me and I started searching for more info because when my husband and I were univ. students he kept talking about Pascal this and Pascal that in his engineering classes. Then when he worked on his masters in Computer Science he talked about the Pascal language all the while as a non-believer.

After the segment on Touched by an Angel I got all of the Pascal books I could find in the Religion section of the Library to see if it was one and the same Pascal. It was.

Which leads me to asking why you think Pascal's Wager is dumb? How is it that you are so much smarter? I see that you are in the Destruction business but what does that achieve? How about doing something Constructive?

Pascal's Wager (the idea that if Christianity is true, you have everything to gain, and if it is false you have everything to lose) is considered by most theologians and philosophers to be one of the most important theological ideas proposed. While does not do anything to prove whether God exist or not, it does argue for the importance of knowing whether God exist, and that belief in Him - even if false - has value.

The idea is important enought that it has been used and reused by not only Christian but other religious and non-religious groups. Even as a rebutal known as Pascal's Flaw (look it up)

I like the way CS Lewis stated the idea the best: "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important."

Does it proof God? No. Was never intended to.
Does it proof the importance of being sure you are right about God? Absolutely. So keep seeking "The truth (and God) is out there".

Look it don't matter how the message or the question is wrapped, the answer is still Jesus Christ. It's your choice rather to believe or not. There is nothing wrong with folks trying to reason with pascal's wager or whatever. We can paint the picture many ways and many still choose not to believe. It's up to them.
May I ask, why it bothers you?

We are worth a Son to God.

Not all of us do think it's a valid argument. I can think of very few more contemptible and vulgar reasons for believing in God than because one thinks the "security" is better or because there are more rewards that way. The idea is to love God, not to conduct a commercial transaction with Him.

I'm a christian but I've never heard of Pascal's Wager so I can't really help you on that without knowing what it is.

Sounds like you are jealous of us christians. it is "your" choice to convert, not ours. You live with the choices you make, that doesnt mean you need to cut down christians for your choices made. "rational thinking"? BASED ON REASON;conform to reason;a system which regards reasoning as the source of knowledge. I have to tell you we christians have more knowledge then you will ever know and therefore understand God and include persons such as yourself in our prayers.
God be with you--

ALL christians are not the same so please dont call us names and categorize us all in the same class. we dont try to convert anyone, that is up to YOU.

God be with you---

dude, you are asking christians - you might want to explain pascal's wager - what makes you think that just because somebody uses something everyday, does not mean he has the slightest clue what it is......

Anyone who gives the answer, "you have to accept jesus as the truth because he is the truth cos the bible says its true and the god says the bible its true" should just go screw themselves and speak to muslims that proclaim, "Allah is the one true God and Mohd is his Prophet and Jesus is at best a Prophet and at worst a deluded guy who never knew who is father was"

stop claiming your religion to be true, it drives us crazy.

edit: Its kinda strange that atheists tend to know more about religions and their arguements then christians

Yes, compare societies that are predominantly christian to societies that are predominantly athiestic or an other religion. You will find Christian societies are much more free, tolerant, advanced economically, better acedemia, etc....
