It is generally believed that "Diego" is a Spanish version of "James" OR "Jacob". These names go back to the Hebrew Biblical name Ya`akob, though the Greek translation, in which it comes out "Yakobus".

---------------
[Forgot to include this before]

Now the Hebrew name (Jacob)sounds like the Hebrew word for "heel". Because Jacob was said to be born holding onto the heel of his twin brother (Esau), the name is (re?)interpreted as "heel-grabber", implying "supplanter" (also deceiver).

This may, however, simply be a pun/wordplay of a sort found with many names in the surrounding biblical stories (esp in the book of Genesis). The strict meaning of the name may be more like "May he [God] protect!" This would use a common naming pattern in ancient Israel and surrounding cultures.of a verb plus a name of God mentioned or implied (God/the Lord/he does such and such OR May he... do such and such).

There is some debate about how we got to "Diego"... it may be by means of a shortening form of "Yacobus" as "Iago" as in "Santiago" (Sant ='saint' + Iago), which was then redivided as "San Diego". The Latin word Didacus (teacher) may have influenced the form "Diego".

My name has almost always been Ashley Miller or Ashley or Ashley Lauren. I have no problem telling people my full name on here because I was blessed to be born with a VERY popular name! i never feel uncertain or anxious about sharing all three names. Additionally, I tend to change my picture often. So by keeping my nicknames similar, I am hoping that Y!A users and contacts will recognize me. Also, reading all these answers makes me realize my lack of creativity. Ha! I can't stretch my neck like Iguana. I can't take photos or quilt. I can, however, lick my elbow... which is supposed to be physically impossible!

Diego is a name. San Diego is named after Saint Didacus of Alcalá.

San= Saint in Spanish.

He was a lay brother of the Order of Friars Minor who died at Alcalá de Henares, Spain, November 12, 1463.

His impoverished parents placed him as a child in the care of a hermit living not far from San Nicolas del Puerto, his native town. Feeling called to the religious life, he applied for admission to the Franciscan Order at the convent of Arizafa and was received as a lay brother. In 1445 he was chosen guardian of the Franciscan community on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. There, though it was an exception to the ordinary rules for a lay brother to be made superior, his great zeal, prudence, and sanctity justified his choice.

In 1449 he was recalled to Spain, whence he went to Rome to be present at the canonization of Bernardino of Siena in 1450. At Rome he fulfilled the humble office of infirmarian in the convent of Ara Coeli; and his biographers record the miraculous cure of many whom he attended, through his pious intercession. He was finally recalled to Spain and was sent by his superiors to Alcalá where he spent the remaining years of his life in penance, solitude, and the delights of contemplation.

Saint Didacus was canonized by Sixtus V in 1588. His feast is kept, especially among the Franciscans, on November 12.. He is the saint to whom the Franciscan mission that developed into San Diego, California was dedicated.

Diego is a name and has no meaning other than being a name. It doesn't mean anything more than Matthew or Heather or Tamiqua do.

I try to help ; but I am not sure . So take it with caution .
I guess the name is connected with God .
Dio in most latin language means God ; then Diego could mean some one or some thing dedicated to God .
