I am searching for a black male pug puppy. We found a breeder who offers a 72 hour guarantee against contagious diseases in which during that time period we are suggested to bring our puppy to OUR vet (after being checked by hers) to guarantee that he will be free of contagious diseases.
She does not offer a One or Two year guarantee against 'genetic' disorders (eye, breathing, hip, etc. problems). Is that a normal practice?
Also, I need advice on what to ask her to make sure I cover all my bases. She has "excellent references" to provide to me to attest to the general health of her puppies. She says they are AKC pups and that she tries to keep in touch with all her puppies' families.

This is common for dog breeders to offer a 72 hour guarantee. But the problem is, is that she is only covering Contagious Diseases like Parvo, etc. I would ask her about a guarantee for genetic disorders. Also, ask to see the parents, and ask if they have any disorders, like umblical hernias, ear problems, and skin allergies. All of these are common in Pugs. Eyes usually dont have anything in Pugs, most likely if it was anything, it would be what is called a "cherry eye" http://www.acvo.com/public/cherry_eye.htm here is a website that will tell you all about Cherry Eyes. Ask if the parents, or any offspring ever came up with that. The Vet will be able to tell if the puppy will have a hip dysplasia within the 72 hours. Heres a website to find more information on that http://www.vetinfo.com/ddyspla.html Most of the time you should get a puppy that is fine. Make sure that it has been wormed before you get it or soon after, puppies almost always have internal parasites. Remember that you may see worms shortly after it is wormed in its stool. Thats normal. I would get a Fecal done to ensure that you are getting all kinds of worms. You may get the breeder to cover the expenses of the wormer if she wormed him with a wormer that doesnt get a worm that your pet has. Make sure you talk with her about that before hand and find out.

If she can't provide a guarentee against genetic disorders, I wouldn't buy the puppy. A responsible breeder will genetically screen the parents and blood lines for genetic defects in hope of making it least likely that their puppies will have these genetic conditions.

Reality is if the breeder doesn't offer a genetic guarentee, then those puppies will probably have those genetic defects. So you might have bought the puppy for a reasonable price but you will be paying a whole lot more later on in medical bills. You get what you pay for.

I know this first hand, I fell in love with a last to go husky from a back yard breeder, and just had to have her. I paid 150. for her and already I have put over $5,000.00 into her. She is only 2 years old, and has a variety of eye problems (blind in one eye - detatched now liquified lense, and cataracts progressing to a detacthed lense then to liquify later causing her to go blind in both eyes), constant threat of glaucoma, gastro intestional problems, bottom (perianal fistulas), peridontal disease and the begining of hip dysplasia. She has some mental problems, extreemly shy and a submissive urinator.

So I learned my lesson, next time I consider a purebred, I will invest in a responsible breeder who gentically screens the stock and puppies and offers health gaurantees. I'd rather pay close to a grand for a healthy puppy and not have to deal with the genetic defects that will run me way past that.

You get what you pay for, research the breeder and get the guarentee.

I would say to listen to cassie and answer below with the husky.... I plan to become a breeder and when i asked for tips, i got hated on by animal rights people...i think... Anyway, and i also was told about how breeders should haveAll the illnesses covered...including genetic...I'm not sure they go for that long maybe 6 months...that's all i had, but he is still perfect, so if i have been told that i should do all that to breed my yorkie then i would suggest she give you SOME kind of warranty or guarentee

If they are AKC puppies she should offer more than the vet check. Most breeders offer guarantee againist genetic disorders. I would ask her why she will not offer that? Also ask her for shot records and all the papers if and when you get the dog.
