When I was a kid my parents breed all three sizes. Known for being Family Dog, Gun Dog, Companion, Water Dog. Poodles are lively, intelligent, devoted, and obedient. They are good with children and other pets and are often shy with strangers. Has the ability to learn quickly. It wants to be the center of attention and has an amusing personality. Although it has a tendency to be high-strung, it is also eager to please – so much so that many owners feel like it understands them when they talk. It makes a great watchdog and can bark too much. Spoiling may result in a pet that snaps and bites. The toy poodle is one of the most trainable dogs. It is even-tempered and sensitive, enjoys its family, and can be demanding. It should be socialized at an early age to help it overcome shyness. It also tends to bark excessively. The standard poodle is dignified and cheerful. It gets lonely when left alone and should be included in family activities. It is calmer than the smaller varieties, makes a good guard dog and makes a good hunting dog.
Poodles require frequent grooming, including trimming, brushing and shampooing. Their coats should be trimmed every six weeks. During the shedding period, the poodle’s hair does not fall out, but rather sticks to its coat causing matting if not combed out.
Major concerns for standard: sebaceous adenitis, gastric torsion, and Addison’s. Minor concerns for standard: distichiasis, entropion, cataract, CHD, and epilepsy. Life span for standard: 10 – 13 years

I have two standards, both girls, one black and one white. They are the smartest dogs and have us trained well, so be careful what you teach them. Willingly or unwittingly.
I have two very young boys and the dogs are very good with them. My oldest dog is 8 years old and she acts like the mom. She keeps our youngest dog in line too. They are very gentle around the baby and the oldest dog has always helped me keep an eye on the boys. My youngest dog is 3 years old and likes to play with my 2 year old son. Someone unfamiliar with my dog would think that her playing can sometimes sound menacing, but she's extremely gently. The worse thing she's ever done to my son after the fiercest of growling and barking sessions is to go right to his face and lick it.
We got our oldest standard from a rescue group. Check out petfinder.org. We weren't sure how she would take to an older dog, so we got the youngest from a breeder. If you do have to go the breeder route, try and get one with limited papers, it is less expensive. Show dogs, even if you don't intend to show one, can be more than a thousand dollars, minimum.
Our girls get groomed every 6-8 weeks in the warmer weather and every 8-12 weeks in the cooler weather. The sporting cut is a very good cut, no large top knot, no shaved paws, no poofy ears or tails. They don't shed and they don't have fur, so my allergies are not affected.
These dogs were originally bred as hunting dogs and can still be trained as such. My youngest is a champion squirrel chaser and bunny watcher. My oldest only hunts out the dog biscuits.
If you chose a standard poodle, you will have unconditional love and faithful companionship.

I would say a standard poodle. I own one and have a 5 year old daughter and a 1 year old. Our 3 year old poodle has grown up with my oldest and loves both of the girls. He is very tolerant of my one year old trying to "pet" him. Our dog and my oldest daughter are inseperable. He does require a good amount of exercise and toys to keep his mind busy. A one hour walk should be perfect. He is very smart and "gets" things after he is shown just a few times. I keep his coat short and he is groomed every 6-8 weeks. I would highly recommend a standard poodle, they are VERY easy to house train and love being around people! Good luck!

I have two Standard Poodles, a red female and an apricot male. They are both fantastic dogs and have excellent temperaments. They are hypo-allergenic and are said not to shed, but they really do, but their hair doesn't fall out. They also don't smell real doggy like most dogs. They are second in intelligence to the Border Collie.
I have a website all about Standard Poodles you can check out:

Standard poodles, probably because of their size, have never been as popular as the toys and miniatures. The people who own them tend to treat them as dogs rather than babies, so the standards can be terrific dogs. The ones I've known have been pretty smart dogs, fairly easy to train, but do have the high energy level of a retriever (which is what they are).

We adopted our poodle from my brother. The two things that are a big consideration grooming costs and the barking. He is a great watch dog. He scares more people off than the lab...lol.

My cousin has one and he is a great dog.
Very smart and very good with their new baby.
Jackson has learned many tircks and is very social with other dogs and people. He loves the baby abd will lay beside her and follow her when she crawls.
He is sort of high maintainence with all the hair cutting but he is a cool dog.

Honestly as ugly as I think they are, they are very good dogs. My neighbor has one, and it is a very smart dog. I have a dog encycepedia and I looked them up for you, they have a higher energy level, but if you give it a good amount of exercise it should be a good dog.
