Which is better? LeapPad or LeapPad Plus Writing?

My nephew is three years old and loves the Littlest Touch LeapPad. He has a little brother, and I know sharing is sometimes hard for them. He has just started Preschool and doing great. I was looking at LeapPads for Christmas for him and got the LeapPad Plus Writing. Amazon has some bad reviews on it. I was wondering what people on here thought. I have removed the pencil and noticed it still works, which I think would be better for him.

my son has both but we have had lots of problems with the writing one with only one side of book working..(we have taken more than one bk to the store)
