One of conjuctivitis' symptoms is photophobia, so sunglasses makes them more comfortable outdoors. Also, it serves as a "reminder" for the patient and for others that he/she has conjunctivis and that direct contact should be avoided as much as possible.

people wear sunglasses during conjunctivitis.it is not always non-contagious.Route of spread is through fomites i.e through touching the things shared by many people ,even sunglassed shared can spread the infection. So covering the eyes during infection is wise. It is beneficial for both patient and others.
Prevents patient from another superadded infection e.g bacterial infection which can be contagious.
It prevents the patient from Photophobia which is discomfort on exposure to light.
It prevents less touching of eyes by patient so less chances of spread to others.
Gives cosmatic support to red and matted ,messy eyes.

The other person tends to water in the eyes too, it's a involuntary like yawning.
Secondly the chances of the infecting spreading through a handshake etc., too coule be avoided by not touching your eyes with the same hand if you shook it with the infected person.

If you are talking about conjunctivitis or "pink eye" it is extremely contagious and everyone around you can get it. Wearing glasses helps protect your eyes (they get very sensitive) and also helps keep you from accidentally wiping them and spreading the germs to other people. Some people wear glasses so others don't see their eyes all full of crud, swollen, and red. Sometimes it looks pretty disgusting when it drains.

People with eye infections have a tendency to have very sensitive eyes. Light really bothers them. It may also be that it gives them a reminder DON'T SCRATCH!
