I have recently found out that a member of my family was put into a debtors jail in the Brigton area in late 1880's. Does anyone know how I can research into these and if so what kind of records are kept? Additionally, if anyone has had a family member sent down around the same time, are you able to share where they are? Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is probably to try the East Sussex County Records Office - contact details at the following

Best of luck.

Assuming that this was in England. First, no big deal that they were sent to debtors prison. That happened a lot. Second, you might be out of luck in the records. Some areas have really detailed records and some have lost all the records due to fires or wars, etc.

There are some much bettre genealogy sites than this. You should look around on some of the web search engines for some chat groups that focus on genealogy, and especially genealogy in England, and then you can locate a real expert who will give you the exact scoop on this particular area.

I'm sure that you will be able to find out more when you connect with an expert.

Try Lewes - the Victorian prison is still in use today - not sure what it's original "classification" was, part of it was used as a women's prison. Try the census reports - if you know their name and they were in prison at that time, they would be listed as an inmate on the census or the county office (E. Sussex) or maybe the home office. Hope this is of some use
