Does Graves Disease cause...?

I know a person who is ALWAYS lying and making up stories that are off the wall just to do it. They claim she has Graves Disease and all the extra chemicals that her brain is producing causes her to lie and make up stuff all the time. Is it really true that this Disease causes you to excessively lie? Thanks.

It doesn't cause lying, it just relieves some of the mental blocks to lying, such as forethought. You see, people with Graves may have less oxygen in their brains than folks without it (happened to me). How it transpires from there is determined by other factors. For instance, I lost all short term memory and niceness -- I was a mean witch for the years I had Graves (undiagnosed, of course). However, I think perhaps this person is just leaning on a diagnosis to justify her compulsive lying -- she should already be in treatment is she has a diagnosis and the brain goes back to normal in treatment.

Graves disease has absolutely nothing to do with lying. It is disgusting that someone would make a claim like this. Graves disease is actually a hyperactive thyroid. The patient has a fast metabolism and sometimes has a heart attack because the heart speeds up. These people sometimes get nervous or depressed but they do not become dishonest due to the disease process. I personally know two people that have Graves disease. Both of these ladies are honest and good people.

Graves Disease or hyperthyroidism is characterized by an elevated metabolic rate, abnormal weight loss, excessive perspiration, muscular weakness, and emotional instability. It can be treated with medication and/or surgery. Because of the emotional instability, some people with this diagnosis develop a low self-esteem or image. That may cause that person to lie impulsively - not because of the disorder, but because of the negative self-esteem.
