Do them from your knees until you build up more strength. Do more things that strengthen your upper body, and go back to pushups when you feel a little stronger. You could use weights, or get into yoga. I started doing yoga on a regular basis a few months ago, and it's great for your all around health. The first place you see and feel results from yoga is in your arms, making you a lot stronger. The pushups will come soon enough.Good luck!

Try doing pushups while you are on your knees. That should be really easy. Then, do push ups against a counter top with your legs straight and your body at a 45 degree angle. When that gets easy, try doing one or two push ups each day for a week and then add one more each week (or 3-5 days if tolerated) until you can do as many as you need.
It is important to not overdo it. Just do push ups until you feel the next one will be too hard. You will be amazed that that number gets bigger and bigger by two or three pushups each week.
If you do strain yourself, you may have to take a week off before continuing.

Yes, I recommend doing pusups in the box position so you are on your knees instead of your toes. As this becomes easier you can put your knees further back. Still continue doing your 5 pushups as well, but in time, you should find that it becomes easier to do more full pushups. HTH : )

Start by doing them on your knees. That makes it much easier and will help to build strength. If you can't do those, then start by doing them standing up against a wall and pushing yourself away from the wall. You can also lift light weights, such as bench presses and curls to build up strength in your arms and chest. Before long, you'll be able to do pull push ups.

Do it the "girly" way. Assume the push-up position, but then lower your knees to the ground. You want to be in a slanted position - your knees extended behind your backside. Your arms should be about shoulder width apart. Bend at the elbows until your shoulders are level with the floor. Do them in repetitions too. If you can only do five at a time, do five, rest, do five, more, and repeat several times. You will soon be able to do them the correct way.

I have an exercise ball and I do pushups on it. It has really built up my arms. Try that for awhile and you will see results. P.S. I have arthristis in my knees so this really helps my workout.
