It means putting their purchases on an account that will be paid the next payday... a "chit' is just another word for a 'tab'.

To Run a Chit is to process paperwork (the chit) for a request (leave, liberty, enrollment in a program, change of duty, etc.)

The chit goes up the change of command to the point of the person who can authorize your request.

For example: Special-Liberty (taking off early to take care of a legal matter perhaps) can usually be approved by your LPO (Leading Petty Officer), but a request to enter a program like "Aviation Warfare Specialist" often will have to go up to the CO (Commanding Officer)

I THINK the word chit came from sailors based in China prior to WW-II, but I can't remember.

A chit is a request form that is processed up the chain of command to get permission to act on something. For instance, if you want to order a part, you run a supply chit through. If you want to take leave you run a leave chit through. I hope this helps.

Um, no, I guess some of you guys have never been in the Navy, running a chit is not a bar tab.
It refers to putting in a request for something, the "chit" is the actual paperwork. (For instance, a leave chit)

No no no, I'm in the Navy and a chit is a special request sent up your chain of command asking for something. To run a chit means to send it up the chain of command in hopes that it will pass and you will be allowed to do whatever it is you want to do. It's a special word that has different meaning for us so please don't just guess.

The same as in a bar outside the navy. It is the same as "run a tab" when you're going to have a few drinks, etc. They keep a rolling tab by adding your charges so that when you leave you pay one bill instead of paying as you go.
