Old Cat Lady is right, make sure your kitten is getting some wet food in his diet. Males are at high risk for urinary blockage due to crystals, and this occurs more often when the cat doesn't get enough wet food. People think that as long as a cat drinks water, they're fine, but studies have shown that cats on dry food diets are pretty dehydrated. This is because cats are designed to get most of their water from their food (a living animal, like a mouse, is about 78% water).

I recently switched my cats from a mostly dry food diet of Science Crap to two meals of soft food a day, supplemented with a little high quality dry food in case they get pekish. My male used to be BIG on dry food, and actually went off his feed for a couple of days after I switched them to soft....but now, he doesn't even want to really touch the dry food, but waits for me to give him his soft food meal. Both of my cats are doing much better. Coats are shinier and softer, eyes are brighter, and my male (who was getting a bit tubby free-grazing on corn riddled Science Crap) is losing weight.

I first tried Nature's Variety for my cats, but my male didn't take to it too well, and my female doesn't seem very enthusiastic about it, either. So now they're on Wellness and they both love it. Innova Evo and Wysong's are also good, but the Wysong's tends to be a bit pricier than the other two. All of these brands have dry foods that are well balanced and nutritious for cats of all ages.

And as far as your question; no, he won't choke on the food.

A male cat should not have a diet of only dry food. 50% canned is a better way to go. If you use dry food I have never heard of a cat or kitten choking on that.

So use a good dry food which you can leave out for him while you are gone during the day and give him a can of meat for his evening meal. Wellness makes turkey, turkey with salmon, etc. Natural Balance has some good varieties to offer, turkey and giblet, chicken and chicken liver, venison and pea. He doesn't need "kitten" food if you are using these brands as they contain high quality protein and far for a cat of any age. Their dry foods are very high quality also.

Even young cats are sensible about eating and the regurgitating mechanism that cats have will protect him from choking. Just make sure he has lots of water available since you are feeding him on dry food and I'm sure he will come to no harm.

But if you are still worried, do as the person above says and don't leave him any food while you are out.

At 6 months old he should know how to eat dry food, also, don't give yp the canned either, they need both for a balanced diet. I don't think anyone would want to eat dry food for the rest of their lives so why would we make our fuffy friends? Besides, a completely dry food diet will eventually end up killing your cat i the long run especially when it gets up there in age. I feed ours, breakfast and supper with canned with dry inbetween for munchies.

My cat was eating whole pieces of pizza by the time it was 6 months old. Probably not the healthiest thing, but you have to remember that they are animals and they progress much faster into adulthood than children. Your cat will be fine. They are highly adaptable.

well,I don't think that you should put him on dry food until he is at least 9-10 because he is very small and so are his teeth and he might not be able to chew all the food.

No your kitty will not choke.
In fact they can swallow the dry food kernels whole.
My kitty is so lazy she hates to chew anything (except for plastic bags) so she swallows her dry food whole!
