Cats are independent, dogs are dependent. It is not really an "old lady" thing, I know both men and women, young and older, that have either cats, dogs, or both. I like both, though I have cats and I am not an older woman. Peace.

I think most old women prefer cats over dogs is because, they don't have the most strength that they used to have to run around with the dog(s),cats on the other hand don't run about much, they do but not as much as the dogs.

It is much harder to get a large dog to the vet, especially when the dog gets older. And a small dog can get into a lot of trouble if it accidentally runs outside. Cats are just easier to handle in most cases.

It's hard to bend over and bathe a dog in the bathtub. Have you ever gone to an old person's house, and they have a poodle that stinks to high heaven? I have! You don't have to bathe cats or take them to the groomers. They are self-maintaining, and can be gentle (light-weight for your lap) companions, and it doesn't cost that much to feed them. I'm not old, but those are my reasons too.

Cats tend to be easier for the elderly to care for. They're independent, small, and self-contained. They don't need to be walked, they won't jump up and knock you down, they don't need to be let out every few hours, etc. Plus, cats are a bit quieter.

Perhaps they (the old ladies) are more intelligent than one might believe! (See Desmond Morris's views on the differences between people who choose dogs and people who choose cats.)

Dogs need walking, Cats pretty much look after themselves.

Imagine a fragile 80 year-old woman holding the leash of her vicious Doberman spying a squirrel. Not a very pretty sight, huh?

Because cats are more independent than dogs, they don't need as much attention.

Because require less attention and they don't stink up the house like dogs do.
