Very simple; because anyone who is comfortable in his own faith has the dignity to respect the faith of others.
The new Pope is off to a very bad start and will have a very long way to go to fill the shoes of the late Pope John Paul (sorry, can't remember number).

Pope Benedict is a learned man, who has studied not only Christianity, but all religion. Moreover, he has a great understanding for human history and culture. As a result, he looks at the world with great perspective that is often lacking in today's discourse. Certainly, the Pope believes in Catholicism, but, because of his education, he is able to respect, in not agree, with the views of others. He is a great leader. May God bless him.

Christians must love and respect everyone. That includes respecting other religions. It isn't a matter of judging other belief systems, it is living our own to the fullest extent that is important. What use are words if you do not demonstrate by the way you live that what you believe is true?

The Pope does not respect the false beliefs of other religions. He respects the people who hold those beliefs, as children of God,created in His image and likeness. We would all do well to follow his example.

Would Jesus show disrespect for other religious beliefs? If not, why should the leader of the Catholic Church show any less respect for any other belief as he would show for his own? Nobody has the right to put down any belief no matter how far off base it may be but we should all respect one another and the beliefs each of us has no matter how far from our own they may be. Doesn't mean we need to agree with them but only show respect, the same respect we would want from others. Ever hear of the Golden Rule? Apply it here. Do unto others what you would have them to to you.

One of the qualifications the Bible lists for bishops is that they have good relations with those outside the Church (1 Tim 3:7) No surprise then that the supreme bishop would do so.
