It seems like he is doing it on purpose! Why does he like pooping on the edge of the box and how can I get him to stop?

Get a litter box that has a cover over the whole thing so that the litter can't escape out of the pan when the cat is using and is scratching and pawing it all over they hae a tendency of getting it all ove no matter what so this is probably your best be to look into.

My kitty does it too. And to top it off she doesn't properly cover her poop, so we're often left with a lovely fresh smell of cat-poo. I mean she tries to cover it up but for some odd reason paws the sides of the box instead of the litter.
At a local shelter they use large old plastic cat carriers, this way there isn't litter/crap all over the rooms the kitties live in. I'm going to have to try that one, except my kitty is picky and will probably **** outside the box anyway, she hates changes.

Do you have a large cat? I have nine cats so I have been around so to speak. I have a maine coon cat that is very large. She will poop over the edge of the box no matter if it has a lid or not. I think it is because she is so big and fat. Get a bigger box! What I use are rubbermaid storage containers that are deep with high sides. It is impossible for her to stick her *** over the end of it! Problem solved!

if he's in the box and just missing the edge, he's got the right idea - just bad aim. so get a litter box with higher edges, or one with a cover and your problem will go away!

i had the same problem with my 9 year old. i bought a box with a cover and now she never misses.

When you figure it out, let me know! My cat just started doing that. She is 14 years old and her catbox has been in the same spot for 4 years! She is not a big cat at all. I had another picky Siamese once that would do that if her box was dirty, but I keep this one clean! I had no idea why she is starting this now!

LOL, I hear you. We have a cat that loved to do just that. So we got him the kind of litter box that has a cover over it.
Worked wonders and now he just announces every time he finishes his toiletries.
Good luck.

well, maybe he is not comfortable with the placement of the litterbox. my cat was not okay with her first "spot" and she kept doing that too. so i just moved the box to where she seemed to always go, and we have never had a problem since!
