There are sights out there that have pics and some vids like bjj.org. But like every one else has said you need to learn from a Master to learn it correctly or at the very least a good instructor that a master has trained.

You could. You need a partner to roll with. and then you need to train. You can learn all the basics pretty easy. However you will be missing other things.

I learned BJJ in the military. I think I have a great mind about positions and such. When I'm fighting, position is always in my mind, when I transition, It's so logical that I don't really have to think about it, I just progress through the positions to a dominant one.

Before I learned BJJ, there would be ground positions I didn't understand or know what to do with, but any position easily transitions to a basic grappling position.

Don't listen to all these haters. Martial Arts was DEVELOPED by individuals. They learned what works and what didn't (although many traditional arts continue to teach antiquated techniques that do not work) Trial and Error spawned martial arts. Try running through positions and sweeps, use what works for you!

No you cannot learn online for multiple reasons. You are going to hurt yourself or a buddy because you don't know how to do it right. A choke online might seem simple but rather than closing off the artery in the neck, you can crush your buddies air pipe making a lot of problems. Or what about falling? You can't effectively say that you are adequate at falling from looking at something online. Moves that might look cool don't really work in real life so you need a dojo and a sparring partner who knows what they are doing.

I do think though that you can go to a dojo, learn the basics and then refer to your web site to learn a little extra more.
When I was taking Jiu Jitsu or Judo, every few months there were a few karate guys who thought they knew how jiu jitsu works so they would skip the beginner stuff. All of them would get hurt pretty bad from bad technique on falls, reaching for the floor when falling, or not recognizing a move and understanding the flow of it.
I hurt a karate guy unintentionally pretty bad when I grabbed him, did a roll, and since he did not tuck his head and go with it, he did a face plant and then the rest of his body bent really awkwardly. We had to stop and an ambulance came and got him.

You can't learn how to drive a car online! Go to your local dojo and try it out for a month!

You don't. It can't be done. You need an instructor to learn well. To learn much, at all, you need a somewhat knowledgeable training partner. Trying to learn from the internet will end up with you learning what "feels" like it's right, but isn't. Only after you've trained for AT LEAST several years with someone will you be capable of spotting the important errors most (if not all) beginners make, so they can be corrected. Read about the reticular activating system (RAS) - this is the structure in your brain responsible for recognition. Until you have proper recognition of the patterns of your forms, you can't learn anything significant on your own.

Hell No! You need a certified instructor for any martial art.

NEVER learn martial arts online.

absolutely not. Martial arts is about mind and body. You most definately, without a doubt need someone of a higher rank infront of you to mentor and make corrections.

You really need a live teacher or you'll never get it right, probably hurt yourself as well. You can't correct mistakes you make on your own. It simply doesn't work.
