I'm glad you asked for ways that do not harm the animals...

Here are a just few ideas: -

Spread citrus fruit peel around the area you wish to protect.
Lay prickly plant/shrub clippings around the place.
Use proprietary repellents, such as 'Keep off my garden' (from hardware stores).
Lay open mesh matting on the place you wish to protect so that the cat can't dig in the area.
Get a powerful water pistol and whenever you see a cat in your garden give it a quick squirt - it will soon learn!
You could buy one of those high pitched sound devices that operate only when triggered by the cat's presence (but they are quite expensive and my cat just ignores them!).
Get a cat of your own - it will soon chase off strangers!
I read somewhere that cats do not like walking over old coarse ropes (it reminds them of snakes or something!), and I placed a piece of rope on the bonnet/hood of my car some years ago which did seem to dissuade the neighbour's cat from sitting on my car.

What ever you do, don't harm the animal, not only is that a criminal act, but here in the UK there are around 9 million pet cats so you can never be far from one - hence learn to live with them. Most are aesthetically beautiful creatures who rarely harm humans and they are the nearest thing to having a mini tiger in your back yard. Enjoy!

To begin with - this is truly not a joke! But I have it on good authority that lion poo placed at strategic places will scare cats off. Now that depends, of course, on where you live. I'm lucky enough to live in a seaside resort with a zoo (though I've never asked them for lion poo!) If you live 50 miles from the nearest one then that's obviously a non starter. My daughter keeps a spray bottle of water (or a water pistol would do), to discourage unwanted feline visitors. My mind has been exploring the possibilities of rigging up some kind of alarm that barks like a dog - but I'm sure I don't know how you'd do it. Good luck anyway - that's not a nice problem when there are children about!

Basically you want to just keep cats out of your garden because if they are allowed in, they will crap. I heard that placing a few bottles of human male urine around the garden keeps cats away! This is because they smell it and think it's from a really huge cat! Or you can buy tiger poo from zoos or even Ebay I think and that keeps them away!

Simple and slightly less disgusting option is to buy a few electronic cat deterrents from Homebase. They work by emitting low frequency sounds which you can't hear but cats hate.

Ok, this a weird one but it works. Fill clear plastic bottles with water and place them at intervals around the edge of your garden where the cats come in. The cats will freak out when they see their magnified, distorted reflection and will not come in. I swear, this is not a joke. An Italian friend of my mother did this to her front yard in London and now apart from having no cats, all the passers-by stop and wonder why she has water bottles around her yard (might be the next tourist attraction! Better than the London eye, any day!)

Hi, All cats really hate citrus fruits and smells so you can either by a citrus spray or just put orange peel or cut open lemons out in your garden, situated in the spots that they use. This should stop them coming to your garden and send them some where else.

Lemon rind around your garden normally deters Cats as they do not like Citrus smells. Alternatively you can buy 1 of those ultrasonic Cat deterrents. They omit a high pitched noise which is inaudible to humans but drives Cats mad.

Use mothballs. Cats (and other animals) don't like the scent. Put them around the perimeter you want protected. You might have to re-apply after rain etc but it should work for quite a while.

Water sprays also work but that means you have to be there when the cat is - rarely happens.

Also, people suggest coyote/fox urine (cats natural predator). Also, adult male urine works. Have any friends???

Good luck!!
