This is actually quite common.

Dogs will bark on leash because they feel "trapped". Since they think they can't get away, they will bark and "defend" themselves in a "I'm gonna get you before you can get me" sort of way. Also, if you are communicating tension and nervousness through the leash they will pick up on that very easily.

My one dog does the same thing - on lead she is quite aggressive towards other dogs who get in her personal space. Off lead she feels she can get away if she has to and is much less defensive.

Very simply put, he's barking on lead because he's frustrated. Off lead he's free to investigate, make friends, sniff, lift his leg, do whatever he feels is necessary in the situation, while on lead he's not free to do what he thinks needs doing - you're in charge.

Because your dog feels secure on the lead, it can bark it's head off without having to pay for the consequences, ie. you'll have to defend him if he offends some other dog??!!

mine does the same thing I just think he has an issue with the lead and has to prove a point that his hard even though he is being lead around by a muppet at the other end, its just a status thing, off the lead he is in control (well he thinks he is) on the lead he is under orders.

well i am going to be a dog trainer when i grow up so i have been studing about that kinda things and i read that they do that because they are scared of the leash. one way to solve the problem is to get treats and put the leash on him and hold his mussel closed for about 3 seconds. then give him a treat. reapeat this about 3 times before taking the leash off. keep on doing that and he will stop barking.(dont forget to give him lots of treats!)he will not learn if you dont.

He's probably asking to be let off the lead and once that happens he's happy.

He doesn't have as much freedom on the lead, and it makes him a little more protective. But when he's off he probaly doesn't feel as threatened.
