My guess is that there is no easy solution, except 1) to force the Mexican president to create more jobs in Mexico, 2) ask rich, white Mexicans to pour more of their money in the Mexican economy and less on their Swiss bank accounts. 3) force greedy American corporations to stop exploiting poor illegal immigrants.
I don't think building a gigantic fence is going to do much of anything. They'll just come another way. Do you have any other ideas? And please no racist or ignorant comments.

Your ideas are good ones but how do you propose the implementation of them? How do you force Mexico to fix itself when they and big business has thrived and prospered(for the rich) with the things they have been doing for years ?And what argument would you make to the rich in Mexico to help the poor in that country. They never have and never will.it works for them so why change. You cant legislate compassion.in any country.
The fence to me would constitute a deterrent of sorts and would become a symbol of our commitment to securing our borders and stopping the free flow of illegals into the US. We must not give away citizenship as a reward for illegal activities. We must stop company's and people from hiring illegals .There are already laws on our books to do just that.ENFORCE them, make new ones stronger ,more enforceable ones..Stop the thinking that America is a dumping grounds for every other country's problems,it time to think about putting this country and its legal citizens first.

NO AMNESTY
Deportation,not legalization

You're kidding, right? These are not poor, pathetic people in awe of the American way. They are stealing from us and you'd better believe they are aware of it. They don't pay taxes, they get our benefits (such as welfare, food stamps and Medicaid), they live 12 people in a 2 bedroom apartment and they keep having more and more children so they can stay here. You and the rest of America are mislead by the way these people are portrayed in the media. I see them first-hand with my own eyes every day. It is not what you think it is. They know what they are doing is wrong. It's not inadvertant or a misunderstanding. They have no interest in applying for permanent citizenship because they don't want to BE permanent citizens. They stay here for 6 months or a year, save their TAX-FREE money (by living all cramped up in one apartment) and then they go back to their country with all their TAX-FREE money. $7.00 an hour isn't a lot for say, you or I. But it is when it's tax-free and added to the weekly paychecks of 8 (or more) other adults in one household who also pay no taxes. I see it everday. Wake up.
As far as a solution, follow Tennessee's lead and buy more busses. Only make it federal. Also put a temporary seize on handing out any further work visas untill the slate is clean and a new digital system is developed. And for god's sake, have english be learned BEFORE they come to this country. It shouldn't be our resposibility to teach them what they should already know coming to this country.

The solution has to come from the U.S. not Mexico because in reality is not their problem. You re right a fence is not going to stop anything. I believe that deport all immigrants with criminal records and keep the ones that are hardworking people that needed here. A guest worker program would not only legalize them but would be just like any other citizen paying taxes etc. Too long of a answer for me to give you but that's is a small part of the solution I believe.

Just have the rich politicians pay for them. They get astronomical raises every year. There's no way that they need all that money. Anyone coming into the country by any way must either buy a Visa or become a Citizen or be sent home. Also, not a fence, but a Great Wall of America.

I think those things are important but not enough. When our laws are ignored 'officially' with sanctuary policies and benefits that are targetted for those illegally here, it is hard to convince people that we really don't want them here. Also, our border has become so porous with so little enforcement that failure to build a fence at this point is tantamount to putting out a welcome matt.

The benefit as well as employment magnet need to be dismantled and it has to be enforceable by citizens that the government enforce our immigration laws. It is our children whose schools are being ruined, and the services any of us may need some day, which we fund, that are being drained.

Status quo doesn't work.

Let in more legal immigrants, including from other countries, who will take all the low paying jobs. Places like China, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa have people who are even poorer than many of the Mexicans who come here illegally. I think people around the world should have a chance to immigrate to the United States, not just Mexicans. I don't think our country enforces its own laws well enough, so once illegal immigrants are here, they can easily stay without getting caught. Law enforcement would help a lot if people who came here illegally got sent back

As You Can Probably Tell Already From Other Answer, There May Not Be Any More "Smart Solutions" To The Problem. I Think You Covered It Quite Well Yourself In The Asking Of The Question.

I think the fence is a good start, although it will be covered in graffiti pretty quickly. I don't see a quick solution...because not only do we have problems at the mexican border. The border with Canada seeps in illegals worldwide on a daily basis and basically has been ignored in the issue. I think a good way to start at home is really cracking down on the people employing them...hit them deep in their pockets and they will fear hiring them.

I think ID cards. I know it sounds simple but ID cards with retinal details etc to be issued to every legal citizen. After that, anyone who is stopped without one will have to explain why. If they don't have it with them then they could be possibly scanned somehow by a portable device and the police officer could then link back to a database that tells them if this person is legal. I know it sounds a bit far fetched but it's perfectly possible. Retinal and facial scanning will be used for UK passports soon. For the human rights activists who say it's against human rights, do they not think the country would be safer without murderers and rapists etc? If someone has nothing to hide they should be worried.

Since we can't control the Mexican government or rich Mexicans, our best bet is to jail US CEOs and HR directors for employing illegal immigrants and confiscate all their receipts (not just profits) for quarters where 0.1% of their workforce was from illegal sources (both contract and on payroll). This money could be used directly to support poor school districts.

As for the illegals themselves, we need to get busy deporting. It is their responsibility to seek redress from their own government.
