I want to start teaching my 4 year old some defense tricks if she were ever in danger. She knows to scream, kick, do whatever is needed, but I know there are "tricks". I know there is karate, etc...but I was hoping there was something specific to stranger danger.

I know 1 tick they say if that if a child is grabbed under their arms, the child should throw their arms up straight in the air. Because they are so small, they slide out like butter. Then to run. That is the kind of tricks I am looking for.

People keep saying I should keep my "eye" on her. Come on, get real....I am very very obnoxios with her. I even have an alarm in our house with special screens on her windows. I never let her leave my side. I don't even let her go into the story time room at the library without just sitting outside the door until they let the kids out. Other parents leave and walk around the libray. So I am probably the most obnoxious parent you would meet. However weird people do weird things. Look at that story in St Louis where the mother was stabbed in her own home. I am just trying to be prepared. So if you are going to tell me to just "watch over her" please don't even respond.

I don't know that they have any self defense classes for children that young. I think nothing can really prepare them for an attack other than telling them what to do. I don't know what else they can do next to scream, kick, bite... They have the disadvantage of being weaker (since they're so small), so there is only so much they can do. Maybe you can ask your local police department as they might have the proper connections.

I taught self defense to middle school girls. Of course there are "tricks" but the number one rule in self defense is to never put yourself in a dangerous place to begin with. As parents it is our job to protect our children and keep them out of harms way.

My kids started taekwondo as soon as they were potty trained. If you take your daughter they will teach her basic self defense. And the arms up thing does not work, old wifes tale.

~~~ You should contact your local law enforcement and fire department,,,,Where I live they have fire safety classes for young children and the police dept has "stranger" danger awareness classes,,,your a smart parent to be looking into this,,,It will give you peace of mind and also help your child with self awareness,,,~~~
the best thing to do @ this young age would be to put her in a karate class with kids older than her, then the challenge will kick in!!
if a 4yr old is in danger its because the parent wasnt doing their job correctly in the first place
