All models are extremely well equipped, way less than 20k, and you get a ton of car. They are Toyotas, just with a different name, and completely different idea on how to treat a customer. Well, different in the car industry anyway, they treat you, now get this, like HUMAN! It's crazy I know, but the cars are great and so is the service. Not all Toyota dealers are Scion dealers, so call ahead of time. Your son is going to love them.
Executive summary:
- $14 - 18k
- Built by Toyota with mostly off the shelf parts, so quality and reliability are impecable.
- Off the charts resale value: htt://www.kbb.com for verification
- Kids LOVE them. (just drop the name "Scion" or "the box" around your son and watch his reaction, although not all Scions are boxes)
- 5 Star crash ratings
- Standard ABS on all 3 models
- Standard ESC (electronic stability control) on xB (the box)

When I was 16 I would have loved having a dad like you. Now as a middle aged old fart I think the last thing your 16 year old needs for a first car is a $20,000 car he can be proud of. I would get him something used, reliable, economical, not too powerful, and fairly beat up. After a few years of driving experience he can buy his own car and be proud of it.

You shouldn't spend over $5000 on your first car, because you will crash it, scratch it, generally tear it up, and even spill beer in it. I just looked at a 97 Explorer that was used by the sellers kids at college, man what a mess!
Do what they did, buy yourself the new car and give him your trade-in.

I would go with a Subaru or Honda, both are reliable and known for their dependability. Since it's his first car he might want to drive it a lot and be asking you for money, and they are both good cars economically.

Saturn Ion Coupe or sedan
Very safe and economical...good on insurance too due to Saturns safety ratings.

wow, I would say go with something a little sporty, like a mazda 6, or an audi a4, something along the lines of mid-compact with a hint of sportiness
