"Ever Learn" hit the nail on the head. Never burn your bridges. Be professional and respectful. Some day, you may want to rejoin the team you are leaving.

Make your notice a reflection of your appreciation for the job you are leaving, while indicating you believe your interests have changed to include a need to experience another company or place. No matter how you feel about your current position, make it sound like this was a difficult decision.

In closing the letter of notice, add the words, "I wish (name of current company) continued success and will greatly miss the opportunity to be with you for the rest of my days."

Sign it with, "Very Respectfully Yours (your name)"

In the past 25 years, I have given a similar notice, twice. In the second job, although I hated the position and hated the boss, I kept that to myself in the delivery of the notice by saying the job was too physically demanding for my bad back. It helped that when I had originally filled out the application for the position, I answered honestly about my bad back when it asked if I had any physical limitations.

It doesn't matter what time of day you hand it to the boss, as long as you give a full 2 weeks notice.

I've done this a few times already. Go in first thing, with a letter of resignation already prepared. In it, you should outline the date of your departure, and your intention to assist in any way possible to make the transition easy. And mean it. Even if you are leaving because you hate everyone and everything. You do not want to burn any bridges. (you do not have to give reasons)

Ask your boss for a meeting at his/her convenience. If you are concerned for his/her reaction, invite an HR representative or another management staff that you like. In the meeting, say I have some news, and hand them the letter, and let them read it in front of you.

During this meeting you should discuss or bring up projects or responsibilities that you would like to transition immediately, or that should be flagged. After the meeting, go back to your desk and don't say anything to anyone. Wait until at least the next day to tell anyone outside of your immediate work team.

It doesn't have to be stressfull, or a negative experience. :o)

If it were me, I would let my employer know that I need to speak with them privately and then give them the option to come to you. Then that's when you give your two weeks notice. And like it's already been said, make sure you put it in writing. Nothing should be verbal. If need be, make sure it even states that you'll get your final pay because sometimes an employeer will pull back on that and say "since you didn't finish out your term, we're keeping your wages, ect".

Do it in person on a Friday at the end of the day. That way it is a full two weeks. Then have a copy of the written notice to hand to him. The will have the weekend to think about what to do about your replacement.

I would just go and say that you are going to take 2 weeks and tell him at the end of the day.

it is the start of that work day when you tell them you're putting in your 2 weeks notice.

I would do it first thing in the morning when the two weeks start. Depending on why your leaving, for better money, it will give them a chance to offer up a raise or better benifits to get you to stay.

Do it at the beginning and you'll have a grudge on you by the end of the day.
Do it at the end and your boss might cool off by morning.

Good Luck.
Hope Your New job Is Better.

I would tell your boss you need to talk to her/him sometime during the day when its convenient for them. Just tell him your submitting your two weeks notice but you have enjoyed working for the company...if its true.
