I have a chihuahua and I love her. They love you unconditionally and get very attached. They love to be in your lap and sleep with you, so if you want an animal clinging to you then you should get a chi. I think that they're the best dog to have. My dog cries when i don't give her enough attention or if she wants in my lap. I think it's beautiful.

Do your research. It can save you not just money but a lot of heartache too. Find a reputable breeder. Be aware of the cons that go on. Don't buy the 1st puppy you see. There is no such thing as TEACUPS.
I recently bought my first longcoat Chihuahua. I researched for over 1yr. He's my 1st showdog & I'm so happy I was patient & looked for the right puppy. ALL puppies are cute. But not all puppies are healthy & happy little things. The more breeders you visit & more dogs you meet, you'll get an idea of what temperament, shape & size you'd prefer.
If it's to be a pet, why not look at the option of rescuing? There's plenty of purebreds that are homeless too.
Chihuahuas, being the smallest breed of dog, are prone to many health risks. Luxating Patellas. Open Fontanels. Build up of fluids in the head. Hypoglacemia. They are also very fragile as they have such small & vulnerable bones, especially when only young.
They are as trainable as any dog. It takes patience & persistance. Small dogs are not stupid or dumb. That's a myth. However, Chis need a lot of socialization as then can get very snappy if not socialized well. You must take on the ALPHA role & not let them wrap you around their little paws. The more people, places & animals they are exposed to, the more confident they'll be. You don't want a dog that will cower under your chair everytime someone comes to say hello.
Chihuahuas are not outdoor dogs. They need to be kept somewhere warm & sheltered overnight. From personal experience, they love to burrow under the blankets to sleep or even cuddle up to other pets or people. They thrive on your companionship & therefore, if you plan on working all day while your dog waits for you at home - it will be miserable.
Not to mention, Chihuahuas are a longlived breed with a life expectancy of 15yrs, some lasting upto 19! Be 200% positive that this is a responsibility you want as it will be there with you for a long time to come. It's not fair on the dog if 2 yrs later you lose interest...a dog isn't something you can play with one day & put away in the attic once you're bored of it.
You need to know that Vet bills can get expensive. The dog will need you to feed, clean, train, exercise it regardless of what mood you are in. Luckily, Chihuahuas do not require much exercise & they are more than happy to accompany you wherever you go, even if it's down the street for a carton of milk!!!
Taking into consideration all those things, we must not forget the many pleasures having a dog also adds to our lives...
If you "know" you can afford a dog & dedicate enough time to it. Be a responsible owner & do what's best in the dogs interest then go for it!!!

MY chihuahua is almost 7 and is not a "yappy ankel biter" He is a very tame and well manored dog. Chihuahua's are trainable, very much so. I have taken my chihuahua in to a nursing home throughout his whole life (thats where i work) He loves to jump up on the lap of residents and get attention. Nothing makes my dog happier than a good belly rub after a hard game of fetch (yes my chihuahua plays fetch), wiffle golf balls are the best because they are small enough. Hogan (my chi) always has to have a toy in his mouth and is always eager to jump in a warm bed and bury himself in the covers.

Oh do it ! You wont be sorry. I have a mix of Chihuahua/Mini Pin, and he is adorable. But you have to know up front, they like attention, constant attention. They are basically lap dogs, meaning they want to be close to their owner. Also, mine likes to sleep with me, all balled up under the covers. He likes to have his heads covered when he is sleeping. They are loyal, and SO sweet.

A dog should be bigger than a loaf of bread. When I was in primary school one of the local tom cats mistook a chichuahua for a rat and ate it.

I want one too, go for it, but remember you only get what you pay for, and you could be looking at as much £1800 for a good pedigree, and there is no way you'll get a cheap one unless it's physco.
