Bah, the whole blonde,/brunette thing is a myth. I'm naturally a blonde and I'm working on a PhD, lol.
As far as dying your hair, there are some colors that may look good and some others that may look horrible. Speaking of my experience, I've tried many hair colors. Since I have fair skin, light blondes, some brunettes, and even wine looked good on me; however, black hair looked gross and trashy on me.
When in doubt, experiment :)

You're crazy if you think being brunette in your dream was a nightmare! I long to have long, silky raven tresses, but my blonde complexion won't allow it. You, on the other hand, sound like you got yours from a bottle of bleach.

redheads. A lot of blondes (Faith Hill, Britney Spears, Sarah Jessica Parker, etc) are going brunette, though. Or maybe blonde was never their real color...
