The only people I think get effected are adults who stare and criticize. My husband had long hair his hole life and he is very manly today. I say let him have his long hair, what is he really hurting by it? Nothing. For those out there that might want to be mean to him, tell him to tell them, Jesus had long hair and he was our savior. You can tell the adults that too. Maybe they will get over the thought that long hair on boys is so bad.

I have a friend whos son is 3 and he has never had a hair cut. Before I knew them I thought he was a girl.... I didn't know when I didn't know him. I felt bad when I asked how old her other little girl was and she said HE was 3. I think its okay for a boy to have long hair before he goes to school, once he reaches school age I would cut his hair a style for boys, even if leaving some length.

I think that it depends on the culture of where you live. I know that around where I live, long hair on boys is widely accepted with the huge skateboard population. But, by five years old, a child should have a say on length of his hair. Most younger boys enjoy the freedom of having short hair (ie., low maintanence, much cooler to wear). Honestly, I would worry more about the safety of having excessively long hair on a boy (ie., play equipment, lice) then the psychological effects.

At his age, he's trying to fit in with peers and many kids are still learning the difference between boys and girls, so I'm sure he will be effected by the comments he recieves from other kids.
Once he's old enough to want to have his hair a certain way (like around 7 or 8), he can grow it out and probably won't be teased about it because kids in his peer group will have matured enough to understand that people don't always fit into the typical stereotypes we all recognize.

Yes, there comes a time when a boy realizes that other little boys do not have long hair, and that long hair is for little girls. You may think it is cute, and hate to cut those long locks, but I would bet he would happy to loose them and fit it with other kids. Little boys always get the beautiful long eyelashes, and soft curls. It is never easy to give them their first haircut, but there comes a time that we have to let them be little boys and not babies anymore. Five years old, starting school is a good time to start...

Yes it would deffinately effect him. My son is 6 and that is how they tell the difference between boys and girls. Girls have long hair and boys have short hair. We tell him sometimes girls have short hair and sometimes boys have long hair, but thats the long running idea as how to tell gender for children that young. And chances are if he has long hair, he'll get teased pretty good. Kids are mean without really meaning to be.

I don't think so. Just keep instilling confidence in the child and he will be fine. If anyone as a problem with it, that it *their* problem and they should keep their narrow-minded views to themselves =)
This is a pic from when Ryder, Kate Hudson's son, was younger. His hair is much longer now, and he is even more adorable with longer hair!

Braid it and cut it, then give his hair a nice style for him to fit his personality.. it's one thing for girls, but kids can be horrible... don't doom him... you never know how the kids in school & around are going to be.
