Qoute:
Pound for pound, tea has more caffeine than coffee, but you get 200 cups of tea per pound versus 50-60 cups of coffee per pound. Therefore, tea has 1/3 - 1/2 the caffeine per cup. Black tea has 40-60 milligrams of caffeine per 8 oz. serving.

It's a tricky question. Coffee has the most caffeine with 47-164 milligrams per 5 ounce serving. The caffeine content depends on how the coffee is brewed -- fresh drip has the highest level, instant has the lowest. Whereas a single serving of black tea (5 oz.) can have anywhere from 25 to 110 milligrams of caffeine. So when you break it down to caffeine per ounce, coffee beats tea.
There is a modern myth going around that tea has more caffeine in it but that it is diluted by the water. It stand to reason that this is also true of caffeine in coffee.

It's true that tea contains caffeine, but the comparison between caffeine in a cup of coffee versus the caffeine in a cup of tea is day and night. The average cup of coffee contains 120 mg and the average cup of black tea (the type of tea with the highest caffeine content) only has 40 mg.
All figures are approximate, especially with coffee. Different varietals can have different caffeine content, and the way the coffee is roasted can also change the values.
Double espresso (2oz) 45-100 mg
Brewed coffee (8 oz) 60-120 mg
Instant coffee (8 oz) 70 mg
Decaf coffee (8 oz) 1-5 mg
Tea - black (8 oz) 45 mg
Tea - green (8 oz) 20 mg
Tea - white (8 oz) 15 mg
Coca Cola (12 oz can) 34 mg
Pepsi (12 oz can) 38 mg
Barq's Root Beer (12 oz can) 22 mg
7-up (12 oz) 0 mg
Chocolate milk (8 oz) 4 mg
Dark chocolate (1 oz) 20 mg
Milk chocolate (1 oz) 6 mg

There is generally more caffeine in coffee than in tea, but the amount of caffeine found in coffee can vary depending on the type of coffee bean used and the method of preparation.
Caffeine is a natural plant alkaloid which is used as a method of defence by the plant therefor if the plant has more leaves or a larger surface area it can synthesise more caffeine. In general a cup of tea has less than half as much caffeine as found in a cup of coffee. Typical values of caffeine per serving (250 mL) are 135 mg (milli grams) for coffee where as leaf tea or tea from a bag is about 50 mg (depending on the strength of the brew obviously). Interestingly, even decaffeinated coffee has about 5 mg of caffeine per serving! Although Espresso only has about 100 mg of caffeine per serving, each serving is a much smaller volume of liquid (approx. 60 mL), there for is has a higher concentration of caffeine than general coffee - hence the buzz is greater with Espresso than brewed coffee.
Hope that helps :)
