Actually its simply a hatch, as in batten down the hatch, which means to cover it with canvas. In this case it provides ventilation and access to the gun deck below. Edited 11/19 Ok! let's call it a grated hatch. If you notice this is a gun deck on a man-of-war. Directly below is a lower gun deck. To the left of the cannon is apart of the grated hatch which is hinged upward for better access. I've seen this on an actual ship, some years ago. There was a ladder you could climb and come out on the main deck. I hope this clarifies why I call it a hatch, excuse me a grated hatch! For you doubters, go the the USS Constitution web site, yea I know it's a wood sailing ship, but click on the brown rectangle in the middle of the deck. You'lll get a pretty picture with label. Enough said!

The Bow. Then again on the Aircraft carrier I was on the anchor focsule was very forward, just not the very tip of the front of the ship.

The bow, or for a square rigger (that's where the forecastle is found) it would be the bowsprit. The forecastle (pronounced foc'sul) was where the crew slept on clipper ships.

It is the prow, the bow, or the foc' s' le.

Foc's'le is an abbreviation for forecastle, over the main deck. There is a stern castle (in olden days) over the rear main deck.
