The best language home study course I've seen is Linguaphone. They are based in UK and expensive but worth it. They start you from beginner and take you through all the steps. If you finish the course, you will be advanced.

as much as i think it's great when people want to learna new laguage i just have to tell you before you spend hundreds of (whatever currency you use) on software and language books, the absolute best way to learn the language is to visit the coutry. i tried learning english from a cassette before i moved to an english speaking country and i ended up learning more in a month here than a whole year froma software and cassette. Travelling REALLY is the best education. I'd advise you to save up a little money and then go to Germany or Austria for a few months. A year would be perfect because ina year you could become fluent in the language (like me) ;-) YAY.. sorry i know i didnt answer your question about the software, but i just didnt have much good experience and success with tapes and softwares.
Anyway, hope this helped you at least a LIL bit
Good Luck with learning the language and you can always make german-speaking friends or pen-pals.. they can work wonders too..
