My Japanese wife said she read this in a study. I don't know what kinds of lights or location or wattage. She also says after two hours of watching TV without proper illumination excessively strains the eyes. Why doesn't this apply to a movie theater? We have a 32 inch LCD TV. Does that make a difference?I have seen her watch TV with the equivalent of 300 watt bulbs and not care. ALso she would not mind eating dinner with the same overhead lighting. It irritates me confuses me. Then she said Europeans eyes are different from Asians..Someone help me out here, please

My hubby likes to watch TV with a small lamp on near the TV.

I like to watch TV with a small lamp on next to my chair so that I can read in between all the dull spots and during commercials.

If I'm not reading, I like to watch TV with no lights on at all because it helps me see the screen better, like going to the movies.

Watching TV can cause eye strain. Some lighting is better than none. Having light above and behind the TV screen is best. It won't shine in your eyes and it won't reflect off of the TV screen. Movie theaters are dark to show the best picture. It is a 100 year old tradition that no one has tried to change.
If watching TV with no lights on does not bother you, then go ahead and do it.

I think its rubbish and just her personal preference. Tell her to provide the study info. Having a light behind the TV is annoying, having it overhead is annoying too....if she must have light let it be from behind your line of vision, where you cant see it....or go watch TV in another room until she gets over it and allows your preference to be acknowledged. Eyes are all the same....iris color or lid shape doesnt define how the inner workings interact with the outside world.

shes quite right... sorry
tho she is being excessive
make sure u buy clear, and not pearl bulbs, and light the area behind the tv, and between you and the tv, this means your eyes, dont focus on a bright spot, 2 100 watt bulbs would do..

she is right about eye strain, but if you keep a light on in your peripheal vision, the eyes do not tire as quickly.

put on a lamp behind the sofa with a 60 watt bulb, and you should be okay.

Your wife is right. DON'T watch tv in the dark. What wattage? I don't know. But she is 100 percent right on the money.
