You need to provide a bit more information - what kind of operation? For the most part if a patient is going home the same day (day surgery) then they are normally not allowed to go anywhere till they prove they can hold down liquids and solids - I have had many day operations - usually when you wake up properly you are offered a drink which could be soft drink or fruit juice (like apple juice) and also mixed sandwiches which have everything from tomato to chicken etc then your allowed to go home once you have shown you can take them and hold them down. In this case pretty much anything is ok but just go with what the person feels like eating.
I have also had my thyroid out and a c-section - both more major operations where you stay in hospital for about a week after - in these 2 cases when I woke up and felt like eating I was only allowed to have broth until I started passing wind and then I was allowed to eat what ever I wanted (usually the next day) in these cases I was pretty much told what I was having and then when I was allowed to choose my meals I was told when I could and in these cases I didnt have to think about it as the hospital nursing staff told me.
I hope this has helped :)

Usually you start off with just ice chips. Then you can have liquids..i.e. 7-up, juice, then jello, soup broth, things that are easily digested. If you are holding things down you can eat just about whatever you want. I would think you could drink milk after your able to hold things down. What kind of surgery did you have? That would help if i knew.

Clear broth, jello, then plain crackers, breads, rice. Then move on to juices, tea. Then a little dairy as skim milk in tea or yogurt (good for facilitating antibiotics if taking those).

If the dairy products mix with any medication it should be fine. Also there's this product called Unjury that's great for people trying to heal. Has all the nutrients.
