Along with the chicken soup and vitamin c, I would make myself some hot tea and put some lemon and honey in it along with a bit of whiskey. Knocks the cold out in no time! You don't feel too bad in the meantime either! If you have any wine, drink a glass or two. Get plenty of rest. If you have any Vick's at home rub your chest with it and (I hated this when I was a kid) sleep with some comfy PJ's. Keep warm. If you cannot make homemade soup, Lipton's Chicken Noodle Soup is really the next best thing because it has real chicken broth. Get Well!

Besides the obvious: Drinking Orange Juice and taking a chewable Vitamin C...
Boil Hot water (stove or microwave for like 3 min. tops) and put in lots of lemon juice (does not have to be fresh squeezed) and sweeten with Honey.
Drink it as hot as you can stand it, without burning your mouth and it has steam to open up your sinuses and the honey has natural healing properties and the lemon juice has Vitamin C.
Also try the breathe in the steam from a teakettle, hot shower, or just over the sink and use a towel to keep it from escaping...the steam will help clear your head up and make you feel (temporarily) like a new person with OTC or Prescription Drugs

Vitamin C and Zinc, also pick up some of the Walmart brand Cold and Sinus medicine, inexpensive and it works wonders if you have head congestion, if it gets worse get to the doctor as it could be a sinus infection, there is alot of that going around now.

I have a terrible cold too. Take some over the counter meds. They usually relieve some of the symptoms.

Take Dayquil during the day and Nyquil before bed...they will relieve your symptoms (cough, fever, aches, etc.)
Drink plenty of fluids.
As far as going outside...going out in the sunshine 15 minutes a day is very beneficial...releases many natural chemicals in your body to keep you healthy.

Drink plenty of liquids. Water, tea, fruit juice, broth based soups. Jello made with water and drank as a juice is good too. Avoid dairy products. Get lots of rest. Herbal tea can help with that. I love chamomile.

Taking zinc and vitamin c will make your cold go away quicker but unless you have it in your medicine cabinet you will have to go outside.
