Improvised means not military issue .
take a dud bomb , artillery shell , a block of explosive and put a homemade detonator and triggering device on it .
Of course if you don't know what you're doing I don't recommend it .
Some of that stuff can be a little touchy and may send you to hell in small peices .

I'd like to remind you all about DOD policy on releasing statements about current IED technology. Terrorists spend more time online than you do, and they use our statements to perfect their tactics and techniques.
That aside, they're typically made of either plastic explosives, or explosive material extracted from old artillery rounds, surrounded by any number of shapes or types of metal for shrapnel. That's your basic bomb.
Sorry man, can't provide more info than that.

farfromfl is right.
This is an OPSEC matter. Whatever you can get from public source, is what you can get from public source. There is no need whatsoever for any servicemembers to aid the enemy through exposing knowledge of enemy capabilities.
If you're that curious, get into a position where you actually have 'need to know' access. Or talk to someone in private conversation. Keep it off of here.

It is simple.
1. Get a dud bomb that did not go off.
2. Take a sledge hammer.
3. Hit the detonator with the sledge hammer to see if it is working.
